Report Launch

September 23, 2022

The SFI team celebrated the launch of its report as SFI co-leads, donors and guests gathered at at the InterContinental New York Barclay hotel to discuss the findings of the newly released report, Counterterrorism and the United Nations Security Council Since 9/11: Moving Beyond the 2001 Paradigm.

The event featured a presentation of the report’s key findings and recommendations regarding two decades of counterterrorism action under the United Nations Security Council, a moderated discussion with panelists who have participated in the process, and an interactive discussion.

UN Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact Virtual Roundtable

August 3, 2022

The SFI team was joined by representatives from the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact to discuss how UN Security Council counterterrorism (CT) policy and activities have impacted their own work in HQ and in the field. In attendance were members of several UN organs, including CTED, UNOCT, UN Women, UNODC, ODA, WHO, and the UN Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights. Hosted by SFI.

OIC Roundtable Discussion

June 7, 2022

Representatives from member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) discussed the impacts of the United Nations Security Council's counterterrorism activities over the past two decades on Muslim-majority countries and the OIC more broadly. Convened by SFI and co-hosted with the Permanent Missions of the Republic of Indonesia and Tunisia to the UN.

Dakar Workshop

June 2 - 3, 2022

This workshop convened counterterrorism (CT) officials from a number of countries in Africa, representatives from African sub-regional  bodies and a range of United Nations entities, as well as researchers, and civil society for a dialogue on the impacts of UN Security Council CT efforts in Africa over the past 20 years. Convened by SFI, in partnership with the African Center for the Study and Research on Terrorism.

Geneva Workshop

April 6 - 7, 2022

This event convened a range of stakeholders from across "International Geneva", including representatives from member states, the United Nations (UN), researchers, and civil society, to exchange views on the impact of the UN Security Council's counterterrorism activities over the past 20 years, with a particular focus on how such activities have affected development, humanitarian action, and human rights. Hosted by SFI in cooperation with the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.

London Workshop

March 23, 2022

UK Government officials and UK-based researchers and NGOs exchanged views on the impact of the United Nations Security Council's counterterrorism activities over the past 20 years, with a particular view on impacts in and on the United Kingdom. Hosted by SFI in cooperation with the Royal United Services Institute.

Brussels Workshop

March 21, 2022

Representatives from the EU and its member states, the UN, and AU, researchers civil society actors, and other stakeholders exchanged views on "The UN Security Council: Assessing Twenty Years of Counterterrorism". Hosted by SFI.

Notre Dame and SFI Hybrid Roundtable

This roundtable featured key stakeholders, including government officials, independent experts, and civil society, to discuss “The UN Security Council: Assessing Twenty Years of Counterterrorism”. SFI Inaugural Workshop at Greentree

This inaugural, three-day workshop and retreat, held at the Greentree Foundation in Manhasset, New York, brought together key stakeholders - including Member States, United Nations (UN) officials, independent experts, and civil society - for a timely discussion on the UN Security Council’s role and impact in countering terrorism and violent extremism over the past twenty years.
