Virtual Civil Society Roundtable Discussion
The UN Security Council: Assessing Twenty Years of Counterterrorism
December 15, 2021
This virtual roundtable brought together key civil society stakeholders to identify areas of impact as well as successes and challenges in UN Security Council efforts to address terrorist and violent extremist threats over the past two decades. The discussion was led by Naureen Chowdhury Fink, Executive Director of The Soufan Center; Alistair Millar, President of the Fourth Freedom Forum; and Eric Rosand, Visiting Senior Fellow of The Soufan Center.
The participants’ contributions informed the SFI’s research as it developed policy-relevant recommendations aimed at ensuring an effective and sustainable UN Security Council approach to counterterrorism challenges going forward. These recommendations, informed by a series of workshops and consultations with a variety of stakeholders over the year, were presented in September 2022 alongside the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
